DID_YOU_MEAN

Privacy Policy

Did You Mean does not ask for your name, your email, or a password, and it does not show ads. This page describes everything it does collect and why.

The identifier

On first launch the app generates a random identifier (a UUID) and stores it in your device's secure storage — the Keychain on iOS, encrypted preferences on Android. Every request to our servers carries it. It is what lets your streak, your history and your leaderboard position belong to you without an account.

It is not derived from anything about you or your device: it is random, it is generated on your device, and it is not an advertising identifier. Uninstalling the app discards it, and a reinstall generates a new one — which also means progress does not survive a reinstall.

What we store

DataWhy
Your search queries They are the game. Each one is checked against the puzzle's forbidden words, sent to a search engine, and kept so your run can be scored and replayed.
Results returned, and the words you claimed To score the run and to show your route afterwards.
Timings, search counts, hints used, streaks Scoring, statistics, and the leaderboard.
A display name Generated for you (for example Guest_a1b2c3d4) and shown next to your score on public leaderboards.

Who else sees it

The search engine

Your query text is forwarded to a search provider so it can return results. The provider receives the query and our server's network address — not your device identifier and not your device's address. Identical queries are cached, so a repeated search may not reach the provider at all.

Other players

Leaderboards are public within the app. They show your display name, your score, your completion time and your search count. They never show your queries or the words you claimed.

Analytics and crash reporting

If enabled in a given build, the app sends product analytics (PostHog) and crash reports (Sentry). Analytics events describe what happened — a run completed, a share tapped — keyed to the random identifier above. Crash reports are configured not to attach personal data. Neither receives your search queries.

What we never collect

Stored on your device only

Your personal bests and a small queue of share events waiting for a connection are kept locally and are never uploaded as such.

How long we keep it

Game results are kept for as long as the leaderboards and archive they belong to exist. Cached search results expire within 24 hours. If you ask us to delete your data we remove it as described below.

Deleting your data

Email info@didyoumean.dev with the identifier shown in the app under Profile, and we will erase it along with every run, result and leaderboard entry attached to it. Uninstalling removes the local copy but not the server-side results.

Children

The game is not directed at children and collects no information that could identify one. It contains no chat and no user-generated content beyond an automatically assigned display name.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the date above changes with it and the new version is published here before it takes effect.
